One of the few people that had significant influence on me was one of my uncle.
Since young i was not a very bright student. While everyone else was acing their primary school subject i was barely scraping a pass, but my uncle took time out to tutor me. He would sacrifice 1-2 hours of his time right after dinner to go through my school work and make sure i could keep up. Then when i went up to secondary school he went overseas to work. Still he would webcam back often and ask about me and my sister, and always reminded us to work hard in everything we do. Its a simple logic that is easy to understand yet very few could really do it. Just how hard is hard?
He showed me the answer. It is to work hard enough so that those you cared about would have a good life. It is to work hard enough so that your loved ones would be happy everyday. It is to work hard enough so that the future of the people that you loved are secured.
I did not came from a well to do family. My parents divorced when i was young, so he was like a father to me. Through his hard work he provided financial support for the whole family. All the annual oversea trips, good clothing and a nice comfortable HDB flat did not came for free, they were all evident of his hard work. Hence since primary school i had always told myself to work hard so that one day i could give back to the people around me and bring joy to their life just like how he did it.
